Granites

Granite is the best known igneous rock. Many people recognize it because it is the most common igneous rock found at Earth's surface, and it is used to make many objects that we encounter in daily life. These include counter tops, floor tiles, paving stone, curbing, stair treads, etc.,

Advantages of Granites
  • Granite is less porous and high durable
  • It is hardest (have higher scratch resistance)
  • It can withstand high heat
  • Less sealing requirement unlike marbles
  • Can be made in various sizes and shapes

Selection of granite

Source and batch - The granites should be of single source; that is, all the slabs should be cut from a single rock of a known quarry.

Sizes - Check the dimensions for suitability of usage - length, breadth and thickness. It helps in avoiding unnecessary cutting and wastages.

Colour and uniformity -  Check the uniformity of colour, grains, patterns and surface undulations.

Thickness - Check the thickness, which should be equal in all the slabs.

Porosity and honeycombs - Check for voids/holes and honeycombs visible on granite slabs.

Surface check - Check the granite slab individually for any cracks and damages.

Hardness - Check the granite slab by scratching the surface with small steel rod.

        Stacking of granite
        • The Granite/ marble slabs have to be stacked only on ‘A’ frames.
        • It has to be ensured that equal number of slabs are placed on each sides of the ‘A’ frame
